Need a detox but juice cleansing isn’t your thing? A single 90-minute Bikram class could be your answer. The 105-degree heat helps an estimated million practitioners sweat out unpleasantries of all types, ranging from unwanted aches and pains to stress, anxiety, insomnia and (unsurprisingly!) extraneous water weight.

All four New York City studios are easily accessible and run by friendly staff members who take special care to assist newbies and Bikram acolytes alike.

Multiple Locations: Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Flatiron, Midtown

Owners: Jen Lobo and Donna Rubin

Classes Offered: Over 300 Bikram classes are offered weekly, including a solid
selection of $8 classes for yogis on a budget.

Bikram-Postures.pngWhat Makes Bikram Such an Effective Workout? The routine of each class is
precisely the same: 26 postures (see illustration to the right), divided into three categories—warm-up, a balancing series, and a seated series that work every muscle, tendon and joint in an amenable environment. The point of the poses and two breathing exercises is to increase blood flow and flexibility. And once you get used to the heat, you’re bound to notice a sense of well-being that leaves you feeling a fine balance of relaxed and energized.

Know before you go: Hydrate! This doesn’t mean you have to drink gallons of water for days leading to class, but an extra liter or so will go along way. And if renting towels doesn’t appeal to you, bring your own! A little terrycloth beneath your feet will make sure your mat doesn’t turn into a slip and slide.

Advice for first-timers: You will sweat more than you ever thought possible, so dress accordingly. (Less is more.) Go easy on yourself. As your teacher will likely tell you, the goal here is to stay in the room. Lastly? Don’t expect downward dog! (Hint: it isn’t one of the 26 poses.)

Amenities: Lockers (bring your own lock), shower, boutique, mat and towel rental

Notable Devotees: George Clooney, Lady Gaga, Andy Murray
